What is the Keto Diet?

By now no doubt where you are in the world you would have heard something about the keto diet.
Wither it is the large amounts of weight people have lost or that it's healed someone's health complaint, people everywhere have been talking about it.
In fact it was one of googles most searched words in the last few years.
So what is keto?

Well keto comes from the word ketone.
Ketones are a chemicals produced by your liver when it doesn't have enough insulin to turn sugar into glucose to use for energy. It starts burning fat stored in the body and turning it into ketones which the body can also use for energy.
This process of burning fat for fuel is called ketosis and is thought to be our natural state one our ancestors would have spent much of their life in.

So how does one get into ketosis?
simply put we restrict our carbohydrate intake, limiting or completely eliminating carbs like sugar, grains and fruit. This will limit the bodies ability to use glucose for energy forcing it to use our fat stores for energy.
While we are restricting carbs we need to make sure we are still getting enough calories in our diets . To do this we need to make sure that we up our healthy fats (avocado, butter, olive oil, ghee, salmon are all good sources) and our proteins (Chicken, Eggs and Red Meat all excellent sources).

Now to get started you can use online calculators to work out how many grams of carbs/protein/fat are needed to get you into ketosis as this will differ from person to person but most people will need to consume less then 30g carbs per day to stay in fat burning mode.

Ill be posting a simple 7 day keto meal plan if anyone is interested in a few days so keep an eye out for the post in the future. It will include tips and recipes as well so should be enough to give you an idea of what eating keto looks like.
